About the Exhibit

Astonishing Portraits, Untold Stories: The World of Thomas L. McKenney is a Maryland 250 Inclusive History Grant recipient. The exhibit explores the nationally significant—and often overlooked—story of Thomas L. McKenney, U.S. Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and his efforts to preserve the likenesses and histories of Indigenous leaders during a period of profound upheaval in American federal policy. Through rare lithographs, archival materials, and fresh interpretive narratives, the exhibit highlights both McKenney’s contributions and the complex, powerful stories of the Native nations whose leaders he sought to document. It offers an important reflection on identity, heritage, and the evolving understanding of America’s past.
